Lynwood hosting 10K run, walk

LYNWOOD - More than 500 runners and walkers are expected to take part in the first annual My Lynwood: Healthy Cities 2013 5K/10K Run and Walk taking place Feb. 9 at Lynwood City Park. The event is co-sponsored by the city of Lynwood and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Century Station. "We've done marathons and walks in the city before, but none have gotten as big as this one is expected to get," said Deborah Jackson, public relations director for Lynwood. "This is a great way to start the year off right. Not only will this event help put the city of Lynwood on the map for hundreds of people from across the Southland who have never even heard of Lynwood and will be running in this race, but we're also hoping that it strengthens the bridge of communication the city of Lynwood has been building between its residents and law enforcement. Crime in the city is at an all-time low and law enforcement credits community policing and neighborhood watch for those low numbers. That in itself has a lot to do with communication between residents and law enforcement." Jackson and several other city employees will be among the participants. The walk and run will start at Lynwood City Park and winds its way through major streets including Imperial Highway and Atlantic Avenue. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. On-site registration is $30 for the 5K and $35 for the 10K and includes an official event T-shirt, race bib and sponsor gifts.
