DOWNEY - The Downey Police Department will conduct a DUI and driver's license checkpoint at an undisclosed location in Downey this Friday night, Dec. 14, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.Officers will be checking drivers for signs of intoxication and proper licenses. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspensions and insurance increases, in addition to fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can top $10,000, authorities warned. "Over the course of the past three years, there have been 333 DUI-related traffic collisions in the city of Downey," said Police Chief Carl Charles. "These DUI traffic collisions have claimed three lives and resulted in 83 injury crashes harming 140 of our friends and neighbors." A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is funding the checkpoint.
