'Young Frankenstein' opens Oct. 20 at Cerritos Performing Arts Center

CERRITOS – The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) kicks off the 2017-18 Broadway Performance Partner Series with the award-winning 3-D Theatricals’ “Young Frankenstein.”

Tickets, which start at $40, are available at the CCPA Ticket Office and cerritoscenter.com or by calling (562) 916-8500.

“Young Frankenstein” will run at the CCPA on Friday, Oct. 20 and 27 at  p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 21 and 28 at 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 22 and 29 at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m.

Based on Mel Brooks’ and Gene Wilder’s 1974 re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic, the stage version of “Young Frankenstein” features director David Lamoureux, musical director Corey Hirsch, and choreographer Daniel Smith.

The film received two Academy Award nominations, including one for the script. It was also nominated for a Writer’s Guild of America Award for “Best Adapted Screenplay.”

“Young Frankenstein” won The Hugo Award for “Best Dramatic Presentation” and The Nebula Award, given by The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, for “Best Dramatic Writing.” It was chosen for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. The stage version has been nominated for the Tony Award, Drama League Award, Drama Desk Award, and Grammy Award. It won the Outer Critics Award for “Best Musical.”

The tale focuses on young Dr. Frankenstein’s (that’s Fronkensteen) attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. With his oddly shaped and endearing helper Igor (that’s Eye-gor), his curvaceous lab assistant Inga, and in spite of his incredibly self-involved madcap fiancée Elizabeth, Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster – but not without scary and quite often hysterical – complications.

The show’s raucous score includes “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend,” and Irving Berlin’s “Putting on the Ritz.”

For the 2017-18 CCPA Season, 3-D Theatricals will also present Broadway classics “Million Dollar Quartet,” “Parade” and “Mamma Mia.”
