YMCA opens new Arts and Enrichment Center at Furman Park

DOWNEY – The Downey YMCA has officially opened the doors to its new Arts and Enrichment Center at Furman Park.

Several city officials, YMCA board members and park-goers gathered around the doors of the new center for the ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday evening.

“The YMCA is to this day, in my opinion, one of the most recognizable brands worldwide,” said Mayor Fernando Vasquez. “I look back at the history of this building here - how far it’s come to where it is today - and I couldn’t think of a better partner than the Y to take over here and really implement and involve what this facility used to be, and now provide and make an impact on our children.”

The building housed the Downey Museum of Art until 2009.

The new center will offer several classes and programs for children and adults. Classes include a range of activities, including visual arts, crafts, dance, yoga, film, photography, and computer technology.

“We feel it’s very important for the community for people to not only see art, but actually be able to experience it,” said Anne Ullstrom, Executive Director at Downey YMCA.

It will also be open to the community during Concerts in the Park.

Cost for programs is $20, or $40 for non-members, with financial assistance available. Child watch is also available for adult classes for an added fee.

To sign up, visit Downey YMCA at 11531 Downey Avenue, or visit www.Ymcala.org/downey.
