DOWNEY – The community of Downey came together for another successful Relay for Life on May 21-22, which consisted of about 900 participants raising money to find the cure for cancer. 

The theme, May the Cure Be With You, was enjoyed by everyone. From all the different booths and the walk itself, the whole event had such an incredible vibe. There were even themed laps like the YMCA Dance, Crazy Hat Dance, Chicken Dance, Couples Dance, Tutu Lap, and the Light Saber Lap. 

People who have never met before from all over Downey and some surrounding cities came together for this amazing event and to share their stories. 

Some volunteers like Abby Fernandez, Abrianna Amezcua and Julie Galicia, of Downey High School,  had never volunteered at this event before but enjoyed meeting new people and hearing different stories. 

“The fact that my family has been impacted by cancer has inspired me to volunteer here today," said Julie.

Other volunteers such as Brittney Najera of Warren High School has volunteered at this event in the past. “Interacting with kids and seeing the smiles on their faces is my favorite part about volunteering at this event," she said.

Cancer survivor and Relay participant Brigette Williams enjoyed interacting with everyone. In her words, “Relay for Life to me, means making people aware that the cure for cancer is attainable but everybody needs to contribute to the cause to find the cure.”  

The highlight of the event was the Luminaria Ceremony, where participants gathered by the stage to honor those who passed away from cancer, those who are currently battling cancer, and those who have survived cancer. 

This beautiful ceremony was truly an amazing sight to see, where the only light visible came from the presentation and the glow sticks that were handed out to everyone to represent the impact that cancer has had. 

Just looking around at all the people who attended Relay for Life and realizing that they are all here for the same reason was the most comforting thing at this event. 

Overall, Relay for Life has fundraised a total of $79,000 by the end of the event and is still accepting donations. Thanks to all the participants, volunteers, and the organizers, this event was truly a successful one!
