Warren High wins cross country league championships

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ cross-country team is the 2017 San Gabriel Valley League champion. 

Warren took first place at the third and final S.G.V.L. cluster meet held at La Mirada Regional Park last Wednesday. The Lady Bears finished with a team time of 1:36:58.50 and an average team time of 19:23.70. 

Warren finished first with 25 points, Paramount finished second with 49 points, Downey finished third with 61 points and Gahr finished fourth with 110 points, respectively.

Bear sophomore Nadine Gomez finished first overall in a time of 18:42.65, senior Leann Pavana finished third overall in a time of 19:02.7, freshman Natalie Esparza finished sixth overall in a time of 19:28.7, sophomore Leeann Gonzalez finished ninth overall in a time 19:49.3 and senior Vilma Alvarez finished tenth overall in a time of 19:55.1. 

C.I.F. Prelim competition will be run today at 9:00 a.m. at the Riverside Course. 


WARREN BOYS CROSS COUNTRY:The Warren High School boys’ cross-country team is the 2017 San Gabriel Valley League champion. 

Warren took first place at the third and final S.G.V.L. cluster meet held at La Mirada Regional Park last Wednesday. The Bears finished with a team time of 1:20:07.40 and an average team time of 16:01.48. 

Warren finished first with 20 points, Paramount finished second with 42 points, Downey finished third with 67 points, Gahr finished fourth with 108 points and Dominguez finished fifth with 150 points, respectively.

Bear senior Emiliano Rodriguez finished first overall in a time of 15:49.82, junior Antonio Munoz finished third overall in a time of 15:59.0, sophomore Fabian Gomez finished fourth overall in a time of 16:01.2, junior Alfredo Santana finished fifth overall in a time of 16:05.4 and junior Alex Guardado finished seventh overall in a time of 16:11.9. C.I.F. 
 

Prelim competition will be run today at 10:15 a.m. at the Riverside Course.


DOWNEY BOYS CROSS COUNTRY:  The Downey High School boys’ cross-country team finished third at the 2017 San Gabriel Valley League Finals held at La Mirada Regional Park last Wednesday. 

The Vikings finished with a team time of 1:22:51.60 and an average team time of 16:34.32. Warren finished first with 20 points, Paramount finished second with 42 points, Gahr finished fourth with 108 points and Dominguez finished fifth with 150 points, respectively.

Viking senior Pablo Calderon finished eighth overall in a time of 16:14.23, senior Jaime Quinones finished tenth overall in a time of 16:21.57, senior Fabian Zuniga finished 13th overall in a time of 16:29.33, junior Matthew Enriquez finished 15th overall in a time of 16:40.22 and senior Martin Medina finished 21st overall in a time of 17:05.98. C.I.F. 
 

Prelim competition will be run today at 10:26 a.m. at the Riverside Course.


DOWNEY GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: The Downey High School girls’ cross-country team finished third at the 2017 San Gabriel Valley League Finals held at La Mirada Regional Park last Wednesday. 

The Lady Vikings finished with a team time of 1:43:08.50 and an average team time of 20:37.70. Warren finished first with 25 points, Paramount finished second with 49 points and Gahr finished fourth with 110 points, respectively.

Viking junior Laura Velasco finished fourth overall in a time of 19:08.49, senior Adriana Higuera finished seventh overall in a time of 19:33.01, sophomore Mia Neuman finished 17th overall in a time of 21:15.01, senior Vanessa Vanda finished 18th overall in a time of 21:29.91 and junior Camila Aguilar finished 20th overall in a time of 21:41.77. 

C.I.F. Prelim competition will be run today at 9:12 a.m. at the Riverside Course.


DOWNEY FOOTBALL: The Downey High School football team defeated Gahr at Gahr last Thursday night, 50-31. 

With the win, the Vikings finished their regular season with an overall record of 8-2 and a S.G.V.L. record of 4-1. 

With the loss, Gahr finished their regular season with an overall record of 7-3 and a league record of 3-2. 

Downey will host Etiwanda of the Baseline league tonight in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs. The Eagles finished their regular season with an overall record of 3-7 and a league record of 2-3.

In the Downey/Gahr game, Downey led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. Gahr outscored Downey 21-15 in the second quarter and the two teams were tied at 28 going into the locker rooms at halftime. The Vikings outscored Gahr 8-0 in the third quarter and took a 36-28 lead to close out the third quarter. Downey sealed the win by outscoring the Gladiators 14-3 in the fourth quarter. The Vikings won 50-31 and with it clinched their second place finish in league play.

Downey quarterback Kijjon Foots completed 20/29 pass attempts for 343 yards. Foots had one touchdown pass, no interceptions and a quarterback rating of 120.3. Foots ran the ball 13 times for 87 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Baraq Ross had 15 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns and Shane Olden had five carries for 79 yards.

The Downey defense was led by Malcom Perry’s seven solo and seven assisted tackles, Noah Skobis’ six solo and one assisted tackle, Jacob Manetta’s four solo and three assisted tackles, Eli Garcia’s four solo and one assisted tackle and Brennan Fields’ two solo and three assisted tackles. 

Coach Williams, his staff and players are all looking forward to their first round playoff game tonight against Etiwanda. 


WARREN FOOTBALL: The Warren High School football team defeated Dominguez at Compton College, 56-27, last Thursday night to finish their season with an overall record of 6-4 and a S.G.V.L. record of 2-3. 

The Dons finished their season with an overall record of 2-8 and a league record of 0-5. 
Despite a winning record overall, the Bears did not qualify for the C.I.F. Division 7 playoffs due to their 2-3 record in league play. 

Paramount (9-1, 5-0) is the S.G.V.L. champion and will be competing in the Division 5 playoffs. Downey (8-2, 4-1) finished second and will be competing in the Division 4 playoffs and Gahr finished third (7-3, 3-2) and will be competing in the Division 10 playoffs.

In the Warren/Dominguez game, the Bears and Dons each scored a touchdown and extra point in the first quarter and the score was tied 7-7 as the quarter ended. Dominguez outscored Warren 20-7 in the second quarter and took a 27-14 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. 

The Bears woke up in the third quarter and outscored the Dons 35-0. Warren led 49-27 as the third quarter came to an end. The Bears added a touchdown an extra point in the fourth quarter and won 56-27.

Warren quarterback Chris Venegas completed 21/45 pass attempts for 409 yards. Venegas had eight touchdown passes with one interception and his quarterback rating was 109.2. Venegas also carried the ball eight times for 23 yards.

The Bear ground game was led by Nikko Fierro-Tuala’s 10 carries for 55 yards.

The Warren receiving corps were led by Robbie Colenzo’s six catches for 167 yards and three touchdowns, Desmond Carnes’ six catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns, Keison Evans’ four catches for 44 yards, Mikel Trujillo’s two catches for 31 yards and one touchdown and Ryan Cachu’s one catch for 10 yards and one touchdown.
