Warren High puts up 56 points in win over Lynwood

DOWNEY - The Warren High School football team improved to 5-2 on the season last Friday night with a convincing 56-6 win against Lynwood at Warren.

The Bears improved to 2-0 in San Gabriel Valley League play and will host Paramount tonight. Paramount is 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Tonight’s game looks to be an offensive slugfest. Whichever team’s defense can slow down the other team’s offense should win.

In the Warren/Lynwood game, the Bears scored early and often. Warren led 29-0 at the end of the first quarter and added another 21 points in the second quarter to take a 50-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Bears scored six more points in the third quarter and led 56-0 going into the fourth quarter. Lynwood scored a late touchdown to avoid the shutout but Warren won 56-6. With the loss, the Knights dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

There were no offensive or defensive stats posted for Warren at press time.

At the time of this writing, Paramount is 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, Warren is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, Dominguez is 4-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, Downey is 2-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, Gahr is 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play and Lynwood is 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Paramount and Warren are the only undefeated teams left in league play. That will change after tonight.

Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking forward to their game against Paramount tonight. The winner of this game will have the inside track to the San Gabriel Valley League title.

The Bears will travel to Gahr next week and host cross-town rival Downey in two weeks.

DOWNEY FOOTBALL: The Downey High School football team fell to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play after they were defeated by Paramount at Downey 48-22 last Friday night.

With the win, Paramount improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. Paramount and cross-town rival Warren are the only two undefeated teams left in league play and will face each other tonight at Warren.

In the Downey/Paramount game, Paramount jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Pirates outscored Downey 21-15 in the second quarter and took that 35-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Downey outscored Paramount 7-6 in the third quarter but still trailed 41-22 entering the fourth quarter of play. The Pirates scored a touchdown and extra point in the fourth quarter and took the win, 48-22.

Viking quarterback Chris Hernandez completed 13/20 pass attempts for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Hernandez also had one interception.

Downey ran the ball 27 times for 82 yards and scored one touchdown. Antonio Ruiz had 14 of those carries for 71 of those yards.

The Viking receiving corps were led by Dillon Laurer’s six catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Xander Orozco’s two catches for 13 yards.

The Downey defense was led by Andrew Garcia’s six solo and four assisted tackles, Aiden Chapman’s five solo and five assisted tackles, Alex Rodriguez’s three solo and six assisted tackles, Anthony Lopez’s four solo and three assisted tackles and Daniel Mena’s four solo and two assisted tackles.

Coach Williams, his staff and players are all looking to win their next three league games to even their record at 5-5 and to qualify for postseason play.

Downey will travel to Dominguez tonight, hosts Lynwood next Friday and will travel to cross-town rival Warren in two weeks for their annual city showdown.

DOWNEY GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Downey High School girls’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 16-8 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 8-2.

The Lady Vikings defeated Warren at Warren 3-1 on September 26th, were defeated by Gahr at Downey 3-1 on October 1st and defeated Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on October 3rd.

Downey also defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 3-0 on October 10th and defeated Warren on Tuesday night 3-1. Gahr (10-0) is the 2019 San Gabriel Valley League champion, Downey (8-2) finished second and Warren (6-4) finished third.

Tuesday night’s game was the annual Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness. Tuesday night’s game also marked the end of the San Gabriel Valley League season as well as the end of the regular season for both schools.

Both Downey and Warren have qualified for postseason play. C.I.F. playoff brackets will be released this weekend and will tell both schools who and where they play next week in their first-round matchups. Downey looks to host a first round game and Warren will travel to their first round game by virtue of record.

Coach McCarthy, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs and making a deep run. Last season, Downey finished with an overall record of 17-11 and a S.G.V.L. record of 9-1. The Lady Vikings were defeated by Xavier Prep 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs.

WARREN BOYS WATER POLO: The Warren High School boys’ water polo team currently has an overall record of 6-2 and are 1-0 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Bears defeated La Mirada at La Mirada 13-3 on October 1st, defeated Santa Fe at Warren 20-2 on October 3rd, hosted St. John Bosco at Warren last Wednesday, October 8th (score unavailable at press time) and hosted Paramount at Warren on Tuesday afternoon (score unavailable at press time).

Warren will host Gahr next Tuesday.

WARREN GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Warren High School girls’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 9-9 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 6-4.

Warren finished in third place in league play behind league champion Gahr (10-0) and Downey (8-2), respectively.

The Lady Bears defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 3-0 on October 3rd, defeated Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on October 8th and were defeated by Gahr at Warren 3-0 on October 10th. Downey and Warren competed in the annual Dig Pink game on Tuesday evening where Downey won 3-1. Downey also won the first game by the same score on September 26th.

The game against Downey marked the end of the San Gabriel Valley League schedule as well as the end of Warren’s regular season schedule. C.I.F. postseason brackets will be released this weekend and both Downey and Warren qualified for postseason play.

This weekend will tell us who and where each team will play next week in the playoffs. Downey may get a home game but Warren will be on the road.
