Warren High football players announce college choices

DOWNEY – Warren High School held a signing day for four football players on Wednesday.

Bear standouts Robbie Colenzo (WR/Utah), Damarryea Armstrong (DB/University of Nevada-Reno), Arvionte Sheffield (RB/DB Southwest Minnesota) and Jabari Hughes Jr. (WR/DB Southwest Minnesota) all signed their respective letters of intent.

The administration, faculty and staff are all extremely proud of these student-athletes and wish them the best of luck as they compete at the next level.


DOWNEY GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 22-6 and were the 2019 San Gabriel Valley League co-champions with Lynwood at 9-1.

The Lady Vikings hosted Ventura (16-11, 6-4) last night in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs (score unavailable at press time). Ventura is the number 3 entry form the Pacific View League. Downey will play the winner of the Brea Olinda/Valley View game on Saturday if they won their first-round game against Ventura.

DOWNEY GIRLS WATER POLO: The Downey High School girls’ water polo team currently has an overall record of 20-6 and were 6-0 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Lady Vikings are the 2019 S.G.V.L. champions. Downey defeated Millikan at Downey 8-6 on Tuesday in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs. Downey played El Segundo at Downey yesterday in the second round and will play the winner of the Oxnard/Sunny Hills game Saturday if they defeated El Segundo on Thursday.


DOWNEY GIRLS SOCCER: The Downey High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 15-5-5 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 8-1-1.

The Lady Vikings defeated West Ranch at Downey 2-1 on Tuesday night in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Downey played Bishop Montgomery of Torrance on Thursday night in the second round (score unavailable at press time). An opponent has yet to be determined if Downey won their second round game.


DOWNEY BOYS WRESTLING: The Downey High School boys’ wrestling team was eliminated in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 2 Dual Meet Team Championships on January 26th at Canyon Springs High School.

The Vikings were defeated by Walnut of the Hacienda League 39-27. Victor Valley was crowned the champion after they defeated Citrus Hill 49-24 in the championship final.

League champions from the Desert Empire, Desert Sky, Hacienda, Ivy, Mountain Pass, Orange Coast, Palomares, San Gabriel Valley and South Coast Leagues all competed. The Vikings will now turn their attention to C.I.F. Individual and Master’s Meet competition.


DOWNEY BOYS SOCCER: The Downey High School boys’ soccer team finished their regular season schedule with an overall record of 18-4-4 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 18-4-4.

The Vikings are the 2019 S.G.V.L. champions. Downey hosted JSerra Catholic yesterday in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs (score unavailable at press time). Downey will play the winner of the Aliso Niguel/Mission Viejo game should they win.


DOWNEY BOYS BASKETBALL: The Downey High School boys’ basketball team did not qualify for postseason play.

The Vikings finished their season with an overall record of 19-9 and were 5-5 in San Gabriel Valley League play. A season ending loss to Gahr at Gahr on January 31st dropped Downey to 5-5 in league play and a three- way tie for second. As league tiebreaker criteria goes, the Vikings were left out. The Vikings started their season with 12 straight wins.


WARREN GIRLS SOCCER: The Warren High School girls’ soccer team finished their regular season schedule with an overall record of 18-5-4 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 9-0-1.

The Lady Bears are the 2019 S.G.V.L. champions.

Cross-town rival Downey finished in second place with a league record of 8-1-1, Lynwood finished in third place with a league record of 5-5, Gahr finished in fourth place with a league record of 4-6, Paramount finished in fifth place with a league record of 3-7 and Dominguez finished in sixth place with a league record of 0-10.

The Lady Bears defeated Lakewood (16-11-1, 12-5-1) at Warren 4-0 on Wednesday in the first round of the C.I.F Division 2 playoffs and will now play the winner of the Vista Murrieta/Norco game in the second round later today.


WARREN GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Warren High School girls’ basketball team finished their regular season schedule with an overall record of 10-14 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 5-5.

The Lady Bears traveled to St. Paul’s yesterday (score unavailable at press time) for their first-round game in the C.I.F. Division 2AA playoffs. The winner of the Warren/St. Paul game will play the winner of the Los Altos/Upland game in the second round later today.


WARREN GIRLS WATER POLO: The Warren High School girls’ water polo team has seen their season come to an end.

The Lady Bears were defeated by Dana Hills 18-4 on Tuesday in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs. Warren finished their season with an overall record of 9-19 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 5-1.


WARREN BOYS BASKETBALL: The Warren High School boys’ basketball team is the 2019 San Gabriel Valley League champion. The Bears finished their regular season schedule with an overall record of 18-6 and a S.G.V.L. record of 8-2.

As Warren finished in first place, Downey, Gahr and Lynwood finished in a three-way tie for second place with matching records of 5-5, Dominguez finished in fifth place with a record of 4-6 and Paramount finished in sixth place with a record of 3-7.

Warren will host Valley Christian (16-12, 4-5) at Warren in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 3AA playoffs later today. The winner of this game will face the winner of the La Habra/Torrance game next Tuesday.
