Vikings give up 59 points in season-opening loss

DOWNEY – The Downey High School football team traveled to Trabuco Hills last Thursday night to play Santa Margarita and were defeated by the Eagles, 59-21. 


With the win, Santa Margarita improved to 1-0 on the season and with the loss Downey fell to 0-1. 


The Vikings will host Hart later today in search of their first win. This will be Hart’s 2018 season opener.


In the Downey/Santa Margarita game, the Eagles scored first and led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Santa Margarita added 10 more points in the second quarter and led 24-0 going into the locker room at halftime. 


The Vikings woke up in the third quarter and scored 21 points. Unfortunately, the Eagles also scored 21 points in the quarter and led 45-21 at the end of the third quarter. 


Santa Margarita added 14 more points in the fourth quarter to come away with the 59-21 win.
Viking quarterback Kijjon Foots completed 14/25 pass attempts for 235 yards and one touchdown. The Viking ground game was led by Foots as well as he ran the ball 14 times for 96 yards. 
 


Malcom Perry also carried the ball 22 times for 114 yards and one touchdown, Jaden Allen carried the ball nine times for 31 yards and Malachi Rice carried the ball five times for 23 yards. The Downey run game accumulated 278 yards.


The Viking receiving corps were led by Danny Ruiz’s five catches for 102 yards and one touchdown and Brenden Hodge’s six catches for 101 yards. The Viking receiving corps had 238 yards through the air. Downey had 516 total yards on offense. 


The Viking defense was led by Vincent Willis’ four solo and four assisted tackles, Alex Cortez’s five solo and one assisted tackles, Justin Cardenas five solo tackles, Brennan Fields’ four solo tackles and Noah Skobis’ four solo tackles.

 

CALVARY FOOTBALL: The Downey Calvary Chapel football team will host its first game of the season tomorrow night at Downey High School when they play Lighthouse Christian of Santa Monica at 6 p.m. 


Tomorrow night’s game will be the season opener for both schools. DCC will play an eight-game schedule.


This season the Grizzlies will compete in the Express League against such teams as Avalon, Brethren Christian, Lutheran, Rolling Hills Prep, Sage Hill and St. Michael’s Prep. 

 

PIUS FOOTBALL: The St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy football team will travel to The Webb Schools of Claremont tomorrow afternoon to play the Gauls. 


The Gauls are 1-0 after they defeated Excelsior Charter of Victorville 34-20 last Friday night at Damien High School.


This season the Warriors will compete in the San Joaquin League against such teams as St. Margaret’s, The Webb Schools, Saddleback Valley Christian and Southlands Christian. 

 

WARREN FOOTBALL: The Warren High School football team will host St. Anthony’s of Long Beach tonight at Warren. 


St. Anthony’s was defeated by Valencia at Valencia last Friday night, 24-0, in their season opener. 


The Bears scrimmaged San Dimas last Thursday night in a final tune-up for their season opener against St. Anthony’s. 

 

WARREN VOLLEYBALL: The Warren High School girls’ volleyball team is currently 0-2.


The Lady Bears were defeated by Santa Fe, 3-1, on 8/16 and were defeated at Bellflower, 3-0, on 8/21. The Lady Bears hosted Norwalk at Warren yesterday (score unavailable at press time).
Warren will host Valley Christian next Tuesday and will host El Rancho next Thursday. Warren begins San Gabriel Valley League play when they travel to Lynwood on Sept. 6. 


The Lady Bears travel to cross-town rival Downey on Sept. 18 in the first of their two scheduled league matches. 


Warren finished last season with an overall record of 9-7 and a S.G.V.L. record of 6-4. The Lady Bears were defeated by Mayfair 3-0 in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs. 


Coach Lane his staff and players are all looking forward to the 2018 volleyball season. 

 

DOWNEY VOLLEYBALL: The Downey High School girls’ volleyball team is currently 0-2. 


The Lady Vikings were defeated by Valley Christian, 3-0, on 8/14 and were defeated by Edison, 3-0, on 8/18. 


The Lady Vikings host Schurr next Thursday and travel to Mayfair on Sept. 5 to play the Lady Monsoons.


Downey begins San Gabriel Valley League play when they travel to Paramount to play the Lady Pirates on Sept. 6. Downey will host cross-town rival Warren on Sept. 18 in the first of their two scheduled league matches.


Downey finished last season with an overall record of 18-10 and were 10-0 in S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Vikings were defeated by El Segundo 3-1 in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs. 


Coach McCarthy, his staff and players are all looking forward to the 2018 volleyball season.

 

BOSCO FOOTBALL: The St. John Bosco football team hosted the Timpview Thunderbirds from Utah last Friday night at Panish Family Stadium and came away with a 49-0 win. 


Friday night’s game was the first game played at the brand new Panish Family Stadium and the Braves didn’t disappoint. The Braves scored early and often and coasted to their season opening win. 


With the win the Braves improved to 1-0 on the season and with the loss the Thunderbirds fell to 0-1. With their convincing win Friday night the Braves will keep their Xcellent Top 25 rank at number one, their national rank at number one and their California rank at number one.


The Braves scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and led 21-0 as the first quarter came to a close. St. John Bosco scored 21 more points in the second quarter and took a 42-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.


The Braves outscored Timpview 7-0 in the third quarter and led 49-0 at the end of the third quarter. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter and the Braves took their season opening win 49-0. There were no game stats available at press time. 


St. John Bosco will travel to Bakersfield later today and play the Garces Memorial Rams. The Rams were defeated by Bakersfield Christian at Garces Memorial in their season opener 27-24 last Friday night and are currently 0-1.
