Downey Fire Department responded to two separate structure fires on the Rancho Los Amigos south campus in the early hours of the morning on Monday.

DFD first responded to a large abandoned two-story home that was fully involved in fire at approximately 2:28 a.m., located near the circular intersection at Erickson Avenue and Consuelo Street.

The building has since been identified as the former Harriman / Superintendent’s House.

Several engines responded.

While fighting the fire, a second structure fire was reported, also on the Rancho south campus. A separate fire response was dispatched.

Upon arrival at the second blaze, firefighters reported a well involved 50’ x 50’ commercial structure fire to the southeast.

DFD has reported that both buildings were total losses, and its causes are currently being investigated.

According to K-NBC, four individuals are currently being questioned by authorities.

This is not the first time that flames have consumed part of the Rancho south campus this year, as firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire in February. 

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn released a statement in response to the fires, voicing her concern for the security of the buildings and sites located on the South Campus.

“…we must take steps to better protect this area from future fires and other criminal activity in advance of the redevelopment of the entire property,” said Hahn.

The redevelopments that Hahn referenced include the development of a $10 million sports center, which Downey City Council discussed and moved forward on last week.

Hahn also made a motion with the Board of Supervisors to direct the County CEO to work in conjunction with Department of Health Services, Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, Department of Public Works, and the City of Downey to come back to the Board in two week’s time with a plan to prevent future fires, arson and other criminal activity on the south campus. The motion passed unanimously.
