DOWNEY - Downey resident Alaina Niemann took first place in Toastmaster International Club 587's annual international speech-writing contest, which took place Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Downey.Rene Estrada won first place in the Table Topics contest, while Downey residents Richard Elliot and Finnouala Anderson won second place in the International and Table Topics contests, respectively. All first-place winners will now compete in the Area Contest that will be held Feb. 27 at Jacobs Engineering, 5757 Plaza Drive, Suite 100, in Cypress, at 8 a.m. The contest is open to the public. A "small fee" is payable at the door.
