DOWNEY - If ever there were a way to be taken back in time to when music was truly entertaining - when style, class and pizzazz reigned and soaring vocal harmonies celebrated a bygone era - then a Swing Dolls concert would have to rate at the top of that list.When three Los Angeles-based dynamic ladies met to discuss the formation of such an act, their mandate was simple: to captivate and entertain with stunning close harmonies, dazzling costumes and stylish choreography. "It was a dream of ours to bring the style and sound of an incredibly emotional and uplifting time to modern stages," said Christina Challey, spokesperson for the group and a lead performer. "Nobody else was doing it and we felt we could do it with the detail and verve it deserved." Once they set out to perform music made popular by the Andrews Sisters and the McGuire Sisters, as well as a 1960's girl group review and a tribute to Mamma Mia, there was no stopping them. They have garnered appearances on television's "Gilmore Girls" and "Your Big Break," and then developed their original variety-style show, "The Swing Dolls Present a Tribute to the USO." On Sunday, March 10, they will bring their show to the Downey Theatre for an afternoon of comedy, dance and music. As the show opens, audience members find themselves in the 1950s, enjoying the elegant harmonies of the McGuire Sisters. The Swing Dolls then segue into the crazy tunes of '60s girl groups and then into the 70s disco beat of ABBA. The show also features swing from the '40s and a tribute to the Andrews Sisters before arriving back where it all began: the birth of the United Service Organization. Comedian and emcee Bryson Lang is a featured part of the show as well. "We are looking forward to coming to Downey," said Challey, "and can't wait to bring our show to this landmark theater that has been such a vital part of the Downey community.
