Summer reading for teens & adults
DOWNEY - Beginning Monday, teens can register for the Downey City Library's summer reading program which runs through July 31.The free program, titled "Make Waves @ Your Library," encourages teens to read for pleasure or to get a head start on books for the next school year. Students ages 13-19 may join the program, win prizes and attend special events, including a field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific on July 10. Teens that complete the reading program will receive a free book and become eligible to attend a pizza party on July 30. The Downey City Library is also offering a program this summer to encourage adults to do leisure reading. "Water Your Mind, Read" is the theme for the free independent reading program for adults. Registration begins Monday. Participants will receive a "book bingo" card and earn a prize after completing five boxes in a row. "This is a fun and easy way for adults to brush up on their literary skills," Librarian Nancy Munoz said. "You will be setting a great example for children and teens while you catch up on the latest bestsellers or classic books." She said the program is ideal for everyone who has even a few minutes each day to read. "You will enrich your life by discovering the reading habit," Munoz added. "Even if you have a busy schedule or are on a budget, you will benefit from this program." The summer reading programs are funded by the Friends of the Downey City Library and community donations.
