Students gorge on pizza for a good cause

Warren High's Stay Connected club organized last week's pizza-eating contest, which was a fundraiser for TLC.

DOWNEY – Screams are heard everywhere, spectators stop to see what all the commotion is about, and wonder...why on earth are students chowing down a whole box of pizza? One word, or perhaps one acronym: TLC.

TLC, or rather, True Lasting Connections, is an organization in Downey Unified School District which provides various services such as medical care, parental education, clothing and food, and the list goes on for those in need. This year marks the 15th anniversary of TLC.

So what does this have to do with pizza? Students from both Warren and Downey High School Athletics participate in a contest where they are required to finish a large pizza before their opponent. Spectators at the event have the chance to donate money or purchase t-shirts and hats, which would help support the worthy organization.

The fundraiser was hosted by the Stay Connected club and held at the Stay Gallery in Downtown Downey-which includes both Downey, and Warren High School members. Kelly Salinas, Stay Connected President and avid student of Warren High School, thought that the organization would bring much awareness and support to TLC.

She says, “I enjoy being in Stay Connected, it gives me the opportunity to go to various events, have fun, and most importantly, give back to the community.”

Salinas went on to say that the club was expecting at least $300 from last week’s event, with 40 participants from both schools.

Debby Flores, Warren High School student and participant, said that she joined the event for three reasons; “Beat Downey High of course, be part of this fun experience, but more importantly, help those in need from our community.”

So after all the commotion and heated competition, who won? In the end, Warren came out victorious, winning most of the competitions they participated in.

In the end, both schools were victorious in that they were able to bring attention to a worth cause, and raise much needed funds to help those in need. Way to go Warren and Downey High!
