Storyteller, author to perform for Library Week

DOWNEY - The Downey City Library will celebrate National Library Week with special events featuring Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald, an award-winning storyteller, educator and author. MacDonald will present a free storytelling workshop for adults April 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 11111 Brookshire Ave. The program is for parents, teachers or other adults who want to learn to be a better storyteller.On April 21, MacDonald will present an evening of stories and fun for children ages 3-12 at 7 p.m. in the library's Cormack Room. "Margaret Read MacDonald is a dynamic storyteller and instructor," said Claudia Dailey, the library's literacy coordinator. "Come participate in the singing, chanting and moving in what she calls story plays." Space is limited and free tickets will be distributed 30 minutes prior to show time. MacDonald has toured internationally and has been called "the grand dame of storytelling" by "School Library Journal." With a PhD in folklore and degrees in children's literature and library science, she is also the author of 55 print and audio books on folktales.
