Sports Briefs: Warren High boys soccer looks to build on last season

DOWNEY – The Warren High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 2-3-2 and have not begun S.G.V.L. play. 

Warren tied Long Beach Jordan 0-0 at Warren on 11/28, defeated La MIrada 2-1 at Warren on 12/1 and tied La Serna 1-1 at La Serna on 12/6.

The Bears were defeated by Palos Verdes 2-0 on 12/8 in the Adidas West Coast Showcase, defeated Cabrillo at warren 4-0 on 12/9 and were defeated by Paramount 1-0 on 12/10. The Bears were also defeated by Bell Gardens at Warren 2-1 on Tuesday. Warren will play Liberty of Peoria, Arizona, on 12/28, will play El Rancho at Warren on 1/5 and will travel to Katella n 1/6 in their final tune-up before league play begins.

The Bears will open league play when they travel to Paramount on 1/10. Warren will continue league play when they host Gahr on 1/12, when they travel to cross-town rival Downey on 1/17 and when they host Dominguez on 1/19.

Coach Miguel Pena, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of league play. The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 18-7-2 and were 7-1-2 in S.G.V.L. play. The Bears were defeated by Loyola in the C.I.F. Division One semi-final on PK’s and were then defeated by Cathedral Catholic 2-1 in the C.I.F. Southern California Regional Boys Soccer Championships. 

The Bears had an excellent season a year ago and hope to follow that up with another strong season. Paramount will once again be the team to beat in league play.

 

■ The Warren High School wrestling team competed in the Edison High Beach Bash last weekend and finished in third place. 

Mayfair finished first with 258 points, Cypress finished second with 234.5 points Warren finished third with 176 points, Bonita finished fourth with 150 points and South Hills finished fifth with 149 points, respectively. 

Mayfair had 11 wrestlers who placed in the top eight of 14 different weight classes, Cypress had ten wrestlers who placed, Warren had nine wrestlers who placed, Bonita had six wrestlers who placed and South Hills had eight wrestlers who placed. There were more than 25 teams competing in this tournament. 

Warren’s Carlos Vasquez finished fourth at 106 pounds, Salvador Alvarez finished third at 113 pounds, Joshua Mendoza finished second at 120 pounds, Matthew Lopez finished fourth at 126 pounds and Allan Dillon finished sixth at 138 pounds.

The Bears’ Calos Durazo finished seventh at 160 pounds, Ismael Bautista finished seventh at 170 pounds, Kenneth Gonzalez finished second at 195 pounds and Alexis Galvan finished fourth at 220 pounds. 

The Bears had two wrestlers wrestling in the final of their respective weight classes. Joshua Mendoza was defeated by Dean Pons of Mayfair 6-4 at 120 pounds and Kenneth Gonzalez was defeated by Aleid Hothaifa of Cypress 4-3 at 195 pounds. 

Coach Brogden, his staff and wrestlers are looking forward to the start of S.G.V.L. competition. Cross-town rival Downey will once again be the team to beat.

 

■ The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 4-4 and have not begun league play. The Lady Vikings defeated Dana Hills 49-47 at the Ocean View Tournament on 12/5, were defeated by North Torrance 48-47 on 12/7, were defeated by Los Alamitos 55-52 in overtime on 12/9 and defeated Carson 73-30 on 12/10 in the same tournament. The Lady Vikings played Garfield at Downey on 12/13 (score unavailable at press time).

The Lady Vikings will compete in the Gator Classic at Green Valley High School over the Christmas Break. Downey has games scheduled on 12/27 against Santa Margarita and Orosi on 12/28. Two more games on 12/29 and 12/30 are against opponents yet to be determined. 

Downey will play Schurr at the Staples Center on 1/4 and will host Woodbridge on 1/6. The Lady Vikings will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host the Dominguez Lady Dons on 1/11, when they travel to play the Lynwood Lady Knights on 1/13 and when they host the cross-town rival Lady Bears on 1/18.

Coach Harris, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 19-9 and were 7-3 in league play. Downey looks to improve upon a solid season from a year ago. Lynwood will once again be the team to beat in league play. 

 

■ The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 3-3 and have not begun S.G.V.L. play. 

The Vikings defeated Tesoro at the Coyote Classic in Buena Park 48-41 on 11/30, and were defeated by Buena Park 48-36 on 12/2 in the same tournament.

The Vikings were defeated by Sonora in the North Orange County Championships 75-51 on Monday and were defeated by Aliso Niguel 71-63 in the same tournament on Tuesday.
The Vikings played Mayfair yesterday at Mayfair (score unavailable at press time), will play La Serna at La Serna on 12/21 and will play Cerritos on 12/23.

Downey will play Mission Vista of Oceanside on 12/27 in their first game of the Holiday Hoops Classic Tournament. The remainder of games for this tournament in late December are yet to be determined. The Vikings will also host Murrieta Mesa at Downey on 1/5 and Sunny Hills of Fullerton on 1/6. 

The Vikings will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host the Dominguez Dons on 1/11, will travel to play the Lynwood Knights on 1/13 and will host the cross-town rival Warren Bears on 1/18. Coach Shelton, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of the 2017 league season.

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 20-10 and a S.G.V.L. record of 3-7. Lynwood, Dominguez and Gahr will be the teams to beat in league play. The three teams finished in first, second and third places respectively last season.
