Sports Briefs: Summer camps now forming

DOWNEY – The Warren High School Lady Bear basketball program is gearing up for the summer by offering several skills camps to young student-athletes. 

Team discounts, sibling discounts and multiple camp discounts will be offered. Head basketball coach Rachel Palmer can be contacted at rpalmer@dusd.net with further questions.

Freshman Bears Boot Camp is for all student-athletes wanting to be a part of the Warren basketball program. The cost is $125 and student-athletes can register at the door. Session one will run from June 13-16, will have student-athletes aged 13-17 years old participating and will be held from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. in the Warren Gym. Incoming freshmen are encouraged to attend this camp. This camp will feature challenges through competitive drills and games.

Another camp is the Bears for a Week Camp. The cost is $100 per session and student-athletes can register at the door. Session one will run from June 13-16 from 4:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. and will feature student-athletes aged 8-17 years old participating. Session two will run from June 27-30 from 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and will also feature student-athletes aged 8-17 years old participating. This camp will feature basketball fundamentals in a fun, friendly, and encouraging environment.

The next camp is the Elite Position Camp. The cost is $100 and student-athletes can register at the door. This session will be from June 20-23 and is also for student-athletes aged 8-17 years old. Camp will be held from 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Athletes will work on point guard skills, perimeter and post play.

Another camp is the Bear Family Open Gym Camp. Registration is on Sunday June 19. Arrive early for the 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. time slot. The cost is $5 per adult and hopes to bring families together in an active gym setting. 

The last camp is the Moms-Dads and Cubs Camp. This camp is $15 and can be registered for at the door. Camp will also be held on Sunday June 19 and is for kids aged 2-6. This camp is for boys and girls and is from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Camp will focus on motor skills with different types of balls. 

The Bears Summer Camps are under the direction supervision of the Warren High School coaching staff, alumni and other special guests. Coaches will include: Franny Vaaulu, Danielle Rodriguez, Julie DeLeon, Tahja Mathews, Denise Gonzalez, Janeane Hernandez, Iwalani Rodrigues and Coach Z.

The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 10-9 and are 1-2 in S.G.V.L. play. 

Warren was defeated by Paramount at Warren 16-4 on 4/12 and defeated Paramount at Paramount 7-6 last Friday. The Bears were defeated by Gahr at Gahr 10-0 on Tuesday and will host the Gladiators later today.

The Bears will host cross-town rival Downey next Tuesday and will travel to Downey next Friday. Warren will travel to Dominguez on 5/3 and will host the Dons on 5/6. Warren will have a home and away series against non-league opponent Hemet on 4/30 and 5/7. The Bears will travel to Hemet on 4/30 and will host Hemet on 5/7.

Warren will close out their regular season when they host Lynwood on 5/10 and when they travel to Lynwood on 5/12. Coach Pearson, his staff and players and looking forward to finishing up league play on a strong note and qualifying for postseason play.

The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of  10-6 and are 3-1 in S.G.V.L. play. The Bears defeated Paramount at Warren 5-0 on 4/7, were defeated by Gahr at Gahr 3-2 in eight innings on 4/12, defeated cross-town rival Downey at Warren 11-0 on 4/14 and defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 30-0 on Tuesday.

Warren traveled to Lynwood yesterday (score unavailable at press time), will travel to Paramount next Tuesday and will host Gahr next Thursday in their much anticipated rematch. 

The Bears will participate in the La Mirada Classic Tournament next weekend where they are scheduled to play Santa Fe on 4/30. After the La Mirada Tournament, Warren will travel to Downey on 5/3, will host Dominguez on 5/5, will travel to Mayfair in a non-league game on 5/9 and will travel to Lynwood on 5/10 in their regular season finale. 

Coach Starksen, her staff and players are looking forward to a strong league finish and deep postseason run.

The Downey High School boys’ lacrosse team currently has an overall record of 6-6 and are 0-2 in the South Bay League standings. 

The Vikings were defeated Culver City at Culver City 15-4 on 3/18 and were defeated by Santa Monica at Downey 16-3 on 4/8. The South Bay League consists of Culver City, Downey and Santa Monica.

Culver City currently has an overall record of 6-3 and are 3-0 in South Bay League play. Santa Monica currently has a record of 5-6 and are 1-2 in league play. 

Downey has scored 107 goals thus far this season and are ranked 172nd in California. Last season the Vikings finished their season with an overall record of 2-15 and were 1-8 in South Bay League play.

Downey is currently playing well and are on a three game win streak. The Vikings defeated Tustin at Tustin 16-3 on 4/13, defeated Beverly Hills at Beverly Hills 15-1 on 4/15 and defeated Damien at Downey 9-7 on Monday. Downey hosted Culver City on Wednesday in a rematch of their game on 3/18 (score unavailable at press time).

The Vikings will host El Segundo later today, will travel to Santa Monica next Tuesday and will travel to Damien next Thursday. The Downey lacrosse regular season will conclude after the Damien game next Thursday. Coach Schlegel, his staff and players are looking forward to finishing their season on a winning note.

The Downey High School girls’ lacrosse team currently has an overall record of 8-3 and are 3-0 in Ocean League play. 

The Lady Vikings are currently in first place in the Ocean League standings. The Ocean League for girls’ lacrosse consists of Beverly Hills, Culver City, Downey, Marlborough and Santa Monica. 

Through Tuesday of this week, Culver City is currently in second place (1-9, 0-1), Beverly Hills is in third place (1-5, 0-1), Marlborough is in fourth place (0-1, 1-6) and Santa Monica is in fifth place.

Downey defeated Culver City at Downey 14-3 on 3/18, defeated Marlborough at Downey 24-2 on 3/23 and defeated Santa Monica at Santa Monica 15-1 on 4/8. 

The Lady Vikings traveled to Culver City on Wednesday and traveled to Marlborough yesterday (scores unavailable at press time). Downey will conclude their regular season against Santa Monica at Downey next Wednesday. 

Coach Mires, his staff and players are looking forward to finishing up their Ocean League schedule and beginning postseason play. The Lady Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 8-3-1 and were 4-0-1 in league play.
