DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ basketball team improved to 17-10 overall with their C.I.F first round win against La Quinta (13-14) at Warren last Saturday night 68-22. With their win, the Lady Bears advanced to play Millikan at Millikan Wednesday night (score unavailable at press time) in the second round of the Division 1-AA playoffs.

The Warren High School girls’ water polo team lost their first round playoff game to Crescenta Valley (26-2) 9-8. Warren played hard but came up a goal short.

The Lady Bears finished their season with an overall record of 9-16 and were the number two entry from the San Gabriel Valley League behind newly crowned S.G.V.L. champion Cerritos.

The Warren High School boys’ soccer team won their first round playoff game against Ventura (8-11-2) at Warren 4-0 last Friday night. With the win, the Bears improved to 21-2-2. The Bears traveled to Edison High (12-7-2) of Huntington Beach on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) to play the Chargers in their second round game.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer team defeated Knight High School (13-10) of Palmdale 2-0 at Warren last Thursday in their first round playoff game. With their win, Warren improved to 18-3-3.

The Lady Bears traveled to Torrance High School (17-3-3) on Tuesday and were defeated by the Lady Tartars 2-0 in their second round playoff game. Torrance defeated Barstow (11-7-5) 5-0 in their first round playoff game to advance.

The Lady Bears finished their season with an overall record of 18-4-3 and were S.G.V.L. champions.

The Downey High School wrestling team qualified 12 wrestlers for C.I.F after seven earned individual league champion honors, two placed second and three placed third.

S.G.V.L. wrestling finals were held last Saturday at Downey High. League champions included Jonathan Prata (106), Mark Lopez (113), Carlos Rivas (126), Armando Padilla (132), Gregory Lopez (138), Pablo Ochoa (145) and Angel Baez (285).

Second place finishers included Rigoberto Garcia (170) and Immanuel Bravo (195). Third place finishers included Andrew Lopez (120), Giovanni Leon (152) and Brian Erdmenger (160). Downey did not qualify a wrestler at 182 or 220 pounds.

Downey placed sixth overall at the C.I.F. Southern Division championships held at Marina High School last Friday and Saturday with 112 points. Fountain Valley finished first with 188.5 points, Santa Ana and Pioneer Valley tied for second with 150.5, California was fourth with 121, Montclair was fifth with 113 and Downey was sixth with 112. Cross-town rival Warren finished eighth with 102 points.

The Vikings had five wrestlers qualify for the Master’s meet to be held this weekend at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario. The top six wrestlers at each respective weight class advanced. Jonathan Prata (106) placed fifth, Mark Lopez (113) placed fifth, Carlos Rivas (126) placed second, Armando Padilla (132) placed fifth and Angel Baez (285) placed fourth.

Downey head coach Miguel Soto is extremely proud of his wrestlers and is looking forward to advancing his Master’s meet qualifiers to the state meet at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield next weekend.

Second place finishers included Jonathan Andrade (106), Justin Pacacios (132), Michael Mendoza (138), Oliver Elizalde (138), Alex Mendez (220) and Jonathon Vega (285). Third place finishers included Ricky Medina (113), Raul Gomez (126), A. Perez (145) and Kenneth Gonzalez (182).

The third rotation of middle school sports concluded last week and eight city championships were claimed.

Championships in boys’ 8th grade soccer, boys’ 6th and 7th grade soccer, boys’ 6th, 7th and 8th grade basketball and girls’ 6th, 7th and 8th grade basketball were all determined. Doty came away with four city championships, Sussman earned two and Griffiths and Stauffer earned one each.

As it stands right now, Doty has won 11 city championships, Sussman has won five, Griffiths has won three and Stauffer has won two.

Sussman won the city title in 8th grade boys’ soccer (5-0-1) and Doty won the city title in 6th and 7th grade boys’ soccer (6-0). Griffiths won the city title in 8th grade boys’ basketball (6-0), Stauffer won the city title in 7th grade boys’ basketball (6-0) and Sussman won the city title in 6th grade boys’ basketball (5-1). Doty won city titles in 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls’ basketball. All three teams finished with 6-0 records.

The fourth rotation of middle school sports will include 8th grade boys’ baseball and 6th and 7th grade boys’ baseball. The fourth rotation will also include 8th grade girls’ softball and 6th and 7th grade girls’ softball. Games will begin March 16th at selected school siites. Games will be held Mondays and Wednesdays with the 8th grade games beginning at 2:00 p.m. and the 6th and 7th grade games beginning at 3:35 p.m. The later games will be over by 5:00 p.m.

The fifth and final rotation of middle school sports will be track and field. There will be six total teams competing from each school. Those six teams will include a boys and girls team at each grade level. Each school will compete in three scheduled dual meets followed by the all-city track meet held Friday, June 5, at 4 p.m. at Downey High School.
