DOWNEY – The Downey High School Lady Viking track and field team finished their season on a high note by winning S.G.V.L. finals at Gahr High School. Several Lady Vikings were crowned league champions in their respected events. 

Freshmen Chiamaka Ikejiofor won the high jump. Freshmen Arriyon White won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump. Freshman Laura Velasco won the 1600 meter run and placed third in the 3200.

Several other Lady Vikings had excellent performances. Senior Allison Sanchez finished second in the 3200 meter run and Kelechi Ikejiofor finished second in the long jump. Lizbeth Velasco finished second in the 100 hurdles and Raquel Hernandez finished third in the 1600.

Elsa Delgado finished third in the 800. Freshmen Magnolia Mordecai finished second in the high jump and finished third in the 300 hurdles.

The Viking boys’ track and field team had standout performances as well. Oscar Payez won the discus and had an excellent opportunity to advance in C.I.F. competition. Brian Casillas won the pole vault and also had an excellent opportunity to advance.

Both the Downey boys’ and girls’ track and field teams had excellent seasons. Boy’s Coach Robert Gleason and girl’s coach Amy Overgaauw are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication their athletes have displayed as well as their strong results at league finals. The future certainly looks bright for Downey track and field.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer program will be hosting a summer camp from Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1. 

Girls aged five to ten years old will have camp from 8-10 a.m. and girls aged 11-18 will have camp from 11 a.m. until  p.m. All workouts will be held at Justice Stadium on the campus at Warren High School.

Coach Dussan would like to invite all interested young ladies to get a start on their soccer career at Warren High School by attending the Warren Lady Bear 2016 Summer Soccer Camp. The mission of the camp is to provide athletes with the tools to improve and enjoy soccer for life.

The soccer camp will offer all girls a fantastic soccer venue with a safe, healthy and fun learning environment for all skill levels. Athletes will improve their skills and fitness for the upcoming season and make new friends in the process. 

Basic skills such as ball control, passing and shooting will be enhanced while fundamental tactics of the game are learned. All participants will have the opportunity to work with established varsity level players and the coaching staff from Warren High School.

Sign-ups will be held Wednesday June 1 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. in room P6 at Warren High School. Registration is $100 cash or check payable to Warren High School.

The Warren High School softball team saw their season come to an end on Tuesday against Don Lugo (17-7) 3-1 after defeating La Serna 8-3 in their first round game. 

The Bears finished their season with an overall record of 20-9 and were 8-2 in S.G.V.L. play. 
Warren finished S.G.V.L. play in second place and were the number two entry for the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Gahr (24-5-2, 10-0) was the San Gabriel Valley League champion and top league entry, respectively.

This season the Bears had two three-game win streaks, one four-game win streak and one six-game win streak. Warren had a .351 team batting average, a .401 on base percentage, hit 24 home runs, had a 1.61 earned run average, a .938 fielding percentage and scored 218 runs.

Warren sophomore Lesley Bojorquez led the Bears with a .440 batting average and had five home runs. Sophomore Brooklyn Araujo led the bears with 28 RBI and junior Jocelyn Hernandez led the Bears in the circle with a record of 11-3 and ERA of 1.17. Freshman Marisol Gaona was also solid for the Bears inside the circle with a record of 8-2 and ERA of 1.90.

Coach Starksen is extremely proud of how well her young team played this season. Things are certainly looking up for the Bears as they will return 11 of 14 players next year.

The middle school track and field season completed their second week of dual meet competition last Thursday as Stauffer and Sussman traveled to Downey High School and Doty and Griffiths traveled to Warren High School.

At Downey High School, Sussman defeated Stauffer in five of six grade level competitions.

Sussman’s eighth grade boys defeated Stauffer 49-37, Sussman’s seventh grade boys defeated Stauffer 55-31 and Sussman’s sixth grade boys defeated Stauffer 45-41.

Stauffer’s eighth grade girls defeated Sussman 51-35, Sussman’s seventh grade girls defeated Stauffer 54-32 and Sussman’s sixth grade girls defeated Stauffer 46-40.

At Warren High School, Doty defeated Griffiths in all six grade level competitions. Doty’s eighth grade boys defeated Griffiths 73-13, Doty’s seventh grade boys defeated Griffiths 59-27 and Doty’s sixth grade boys defeated Griffiths 63-23.

Doty’s eighth grade girls defeated Griffiths 83-3, Doty’s seventh grade girls defeated Griffiths 72-13 and Doty’s sixth grade girls defeated Griffiths 73-11.

Griffiths and Stauffer competed against each other at Warren High School and Doty competed against Sussman at Downey High School yesterday (results unavailable at press time).

The city of Downey middle school track and field championships will be held next Friday, June 3, at Downey High School.
