Sports Briefs: Bears football schedule

DOWNEY – Warren High School will kick off their 2016 football season on August 26 when they travel to Don Lugo of Chino. Don Lugo was 6-6 overall and 4-1 in Mt. Baldy League play last season. 

The Bears will then host Kaiser on September 2. Kaiser was 6-5 overall and 3-2 in Sunkist League play last season. 

Warren hosts Buena Park on September 9. Buena Park was 10-3 overall and 4-1 in Freeway League play last season.

The Bears will then host Lakewood on September 16. Lakewood was 3-7 overall and 3-2 in Moore League play last season. 

Warren travels to St. Paul on September 23. St. Paul was 5-5 overall and 2-3 in Angelus League play last season. 

The Bears will conclude their preseason schedule after the St. Paul game. Warren will have their bye week in week six as they rest, get players healthy and prepare for San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Bears will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Paramount on October 7. Paramount was 5-6 overall and 2-3 in S.G.V.L. play last season. 

Warren will then host Gahr on October 14. Gahr was 3-7 overall and 1-4 in S.G.V.L. play last season. 

The Bears will then travel to cross-town rival Downey on October 21. Downey was 7-5 overall and 4-1 in S.G.V.L. play last season.

Warren hosts Dominguez on October 28. Dominguez was 8-4 overall and 4-1 in S.G.V.L. play last season. 

The Bears will conclude their regular season when they travel to Lynwood on November 4. Lynwood was 4-6 overall and 0-5 in S.G.V.L. play last season.  

The Warren High School football team finished last season with an overall record of 8-3 and were 4-1 in S.G.V.L. play. The Bears were tri-champions with Dominguez and cross-town rival Downey, respectively. Warren lost to St. Francis 21-19 in the first round of the C.I.F. Southeast Division playoffs.

The Warren High School wrestling program will be hosting a summer wrestling camp for six weeks. The camp will run concurrently with the dates of summer school. 

Camp dates are June 14-17, June 20-23, June 27-30, July 5-8, July 11-14 and July 18-21. The C.I.F. mandated “dead period” will be observed the first two weeks of August before fall classes start on August 17. 

Camp dates are Monday-Thursday with the exception of the first week, June 14-17, and the fourth week, July 5-8, which are Tuesday-Friday. Campers will meet four days each week and all camp times are 8:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m. in the wrestling room located on the second floor of Justice Stadium on the campus of Warren High School.

Practices will include running, wrestling and weightlifting. Practices are designed to get student-athletes ready to wrestle at the high school level. Campers need to bring wrestling shoes, a workout shirt and shorts and athletic shoes. The cost is $30. 

The summer wrestling camp will be run by head coach Tim Brogden and assistant coaches Medina, Gutierrez and Mariscal.

The Downey High School boys’ soccer program began its annual summer camp on Monday. 
The camp will run Monday-Friday from June 13-17 and again Monday-Friday from June 27-July 1. Camp hours are 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and will take place at Allen Layne Stadium on the campus of Downey High School. The camp fee is $150.00.

Coach Mires and his staff are encouraging young student-athletes to prepare themselves to play soccer at the next level by attending the Viking Soccer Camp. The camp is open to boys of all ages and skill levels. 

Incoming freshmen or current students looking to make the Downey High School soccer team are strongly encouraged to attend this summer camp.

Even if you are still a year or years away from competing at the high school level, this camp will present an excellent opportunity to learn from coaches and players already competing at the high school level. The Downey High School wrestling program will have a new look this summer. Beginning this winter sports season Downey will field both a boy’s and girl’s wrestling team. 

The summer program is essential to introduce and develop the proper techniques of wrestling strength and cardio training essential for a successful wrestling season. Girls and incoming freshmen are encouraged to join.

This summer the Downey High School wrestling program will be conducting practices at the Columbus High School Gym due to the locker room construction taking place at Downey High. Columbus High School is located at 12330 Woodruff Avenue.

Practices for new wrestlers will begin on Monday, June 20, and will conclude on Thursday, July 21. Practices will be Monday-Thursday and will last from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. 

The summer fee is $100 and includes six weeks of coaching, summer league team fees and three t-shirts. The C.I.F. mandated “dead period’ will be observed the first two weeks in August before fall classes start on August 17.

To become a Downey wrestler an individual must be punctual and prepared, be positive and accept coaching, be hygenic, carry your weight and make up for it when you don’t, be a student of the discipline, be supportive, be a positive member of society and never give up never quit.
