DOWNEY — Downey philanthropist Dr. Mary Stauffer is turning 102 and Downey is throwing a party.

The Mary R. Stauffer Foundation is hosting the party Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Columbia Memorial Space Center. Admission is free the entire day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a reception planned for 11 a.m.

Stauffer is widely known in Downey for her charitable giving, particularly in support of education. Her foundation alone has awarded more than $5 million to Downey residents and non-profits.

In 2014, the Downey school board voted to rename West Middle School in Stauffer’s honor.

“Dr. Mary Stauffer is truly a remarkable woman who has impacted the lives of many people near and far,” the city of Downey said in a press release. “With her determination to promote education and career advancement, she has provided many opportunities to so many people.”

Stauffer will be at the party to greet guests. The space center is located at 12400 Columbia Way.
