Songfest '09 begins tomorrow

DOWNEY -- The 17th annual interfaith, multi-cultural Songfest, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be held tomorrow at the church's south Downey facility, 12425 Orizaba Ave.Songfest will feature choral and gospel singing, along with performances and talent from Downey and neighboring communities. Seven musical groups and soloists are scheduled to perform, including: Beverly Taylor; the New City Parish Choir of the Ascension Lutheran Church, led by "gospel cheerleader" Mark Coates; the Voices of Inspiration and Immanuel Community Gospel Choir, led by Alexander Hamilton; the Hollywood Mass Choir of the Presbyterian Church, led by director Patrick Hare; Tapestry, a Redondo Beach women's choir; the Hacienda Heights 5th Ward Chinese Choir; and a women's choir representing the Downey stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led by Kristie Larsen. "We are happy to once again have such marvelous talent at our annual musical togetherness event," said Lois Buchanan, community relations director for the Downey stake and coordinator of the event. "It is our pleasure to again offer an evening of music and togetherness to the people of Downey and to our neighboring communities. "It is also great opportunity to meet as friends from various religions and from different cultures. May we continue to build upon the love and respect for one another throughout our communities. Everyone is invited to this free evening of harmony." Prelude music begins at 6:45 p.m., and the program will begin at 7. Admission and parking are free.
