Rep. Linda Sánchez blasts President Trump’s address to Congress
DOWNEY – Rep. Linda Sánchez did not hold back in her criticism of President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night, calling his remarks “self-congratulatory nonsense” and accusing him of failing to offer meaningful solutions for everyday Americans.
In a sharply worded statement, Sánchez, a Democrat representing California’s 38th Congressional District, dismissed Trump’s claims that he is restoring the American dream, arguing that his policies have instead made life harder for working families.
“He had the audacity to stand before the country and claim he’s restoring the American dream. Are you kidding me?” Sánchez said. “The chaos he’s unleashed since taking office has pushed that dream further out of reach for hardworking families.”
Sánchez also criticized congressional Republicans for applauding Trump’s policy agenda, which she described as a plan to “gut everything this country stands for” in favor of tax breaks for the wealthy.
“Republicans in the chamber might have cheered as he smugly laid out his plan to gut everything this country stands for, all so the rich can get another tax break. But the American people aren’t buying it,” she said.
She went on to accuse Trump of using divisive rhetoric and prioritizing his own interests over those of the American people.
“Americans have had enough of the empty words, the hollow promises and the constant division. They’re tired of a president who only cares about himself,” Sánchez said.
Trump’s address, which touched on economic policies, immigration, and national security, drew mixed reactions from lawmakers. While Republicans largely praised his speech, Democrats like Sánchez dismissed it as lacking substance and failing to address the needs of middle-class families.
Sánchez, who has served in Congress since 2003, has been an outspoken critic of Trump and his administration. As one of the highest-ranking Latinas in Congress, she has frequently advocated for policies aimed at protecting immigrant communities, expanding economic opportunities, and strengthening workers' rights.
Sanchez’s 38th Congressional District includes portions of north Downey.
