Ralph Francis Osterbauer
Ralph Francis Osterbauer, 92, Downey resident of more than sixty years, passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2015. He lived a life exemplified by Christian faith and friendship, generosity, kindness, and a responsibility to always help others. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Born on September 14, 1922, in Fellows, California, Ralph was the youngest child of W. Claude and Marion Orchard Osterbauer. He moved with his parents and older brother, Louis, to Los Angeles, graduated from Washington High School in 1940 and later attended the University of Southern California. Upon his return from service as a Midshipman in World War II, Ralph married Dorothy Lillie Camp on August 27, 1949 and they became the parents of three sons, Donald, (deceased), Paul, (deceased) and Alan. He worked in his father’s business, Osterbauer Compressor Services, where he served as President and CEO for nearly 50 years. Ralph loved his job, and especially enjoyed working with the wonderful employees. He was known for his honesty and integrity, and he always strived to be a fair businessman. On December 30, 1974, Ralph married Ellen McRae Gleason, and the pair became parents of fourteen children. Ralph was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed serving in many capacities. He was always involved with the choir, and had a beautiful bass voice and shared his talent often as a soloist. In addition to his sons and first wife, Ralph is predeceased by daughter, Rachel Gleason Mittleman, and his great-granddaughter Kate Gleason. He is survived by his wife, Ellen, and his children, Alan Osterbauer, Barbara (Eric) Roberts, Mary (Jim) Petty, Eilene (Ron) Baker, Robert (Cindy) Gleason, Richard (Lori) Gleason, Melynda Gleason, Martha (Dean) Michael, Melissa (David) Williams, John (Julie) Gleason, and Tom (Rebecca) Gleason; his 37 grandchildren, and his 24 great-grandchildren. His family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all who helped care for him during the last months of his life.
