Police make arrest in stabbing

DOWNEY − Downey police have arrested a man in connection with a stabbing and attempted carjacking earlier this month. Police responded to the 10000 block of Lakewood Boulevard at around 4:28 p.m. on May 11 after receiving reports of an assault.

Police officers discovered that the victim had been approached by a Hispanic man who demanded the victim’s car keys and wallet. When the victim refused, the suspect stabbled and slashed the victim with a box cutter, police said.

The suspect fled before police officers arrived. The victim was treated at a local hospital.

Downey detectives identified the suspect as Tommy Obregon, a 39-year-old Pico Rivera resident. On Wednesday, detectives found Obregon in Norwalk and arrested him without incident.

He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon.

Anyone with additional information about the stabbing is asked to call Detective Mike Galindo at (562) 904-2330.
