Planning Commission OKs design plans for new YMCA
DOWNEY — The new Kolar Family YMCA took a big step forward last week with plans for the new facility getting the green light from Downey’s Planning Commission.
The current 60,927 square foot YMCA building, located at the southwest corner of Downey Avenue and Arnett Street, will be demolished — with the exception of the gymnasium — alongside a single-family home also on the lot to make way for a new 18,718 square foot facility.
The existing 7,625 square foot gymnasium will be retained, retrofitted, and upgraded, and will see a 975 square foot addition.
The project also includes a new 2,271 square foot utility basement, and 1,640 square foot outdoor pickleball court.
The Planning Commission approved the project 4-0; Vice Chair Mario Guerra, who serves on the Board of Directors of the YMCA, recused himself “out of an abundance of caution.”
Steve Roberson, volunteer capital campaign chair for the Kolar Family YMCA, said that the Y was “grateful for continued collaboration between the city staff and the YMCA team.”
“We’re thrilled by the Planning Commission’s approval of these designs, which marks a crucial milestone in bringing this project to life,” said Roberson. “The ongoing support from the City Council has been vital in moving us forward. This is a significant step towards providing our community with a modern, purpose-built center for health, recreation, and togetherness.”
The current facility was constructed in 1965. Already needing significant repair, the site closed in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.
