Pepe's restaurant closes after 48 years, making way for Raising Cane's

DOWNEY — After 48 years of serving the community, Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant officially closed its doors on Saturday, marking the end of an era for a beloved local institution.

In an emotional Instagram post, the restaurant thanked customers for decades of support.

“Today marks the end of an incredible chapter as Pepe's closes its doors after 48 unforgettable years,” the restaurant wrote. “Pepe's wasn't just a restaurant, it was a place where memories were made, friendships were formed, and community came together… While this chapter has come to an end, the memories we've created together will remain in our hearts forever. Thank you for being part of our story.”

The restaurant’s final day saw an outpouring of love from longtime patrons, with lines stretching around the building and spilling onto Lakewood Boulevard. Families, friends, and community members gathered for one last meal, sharing memories and expressing gratitude for the small, family-owned restaurant that had become a cornerstone of Downey life.

The restaurant’s closure comes as the property transitions to make way for a Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, part of the national chain known for its chicken finger meals and signature Cane’s Sauce. While the addition of Raising Cane’s reflects the growing trend of national chains expanding in Downey, for many, it’s a bittersweet change.

“It’s heartbreaking to see Pepe’s go,” said Downey resident Cynthia Martinez. “It’s been a part of my life since I was a kid. I understand change is inevitable, but nothing can replace the memories my family and I made there.”

Opened in 1976, Pepe’s was more than just a restaurant for its patrons—it was a gathering place for the community, a spot where neighbors connected over breakfast burritos, beef and chicken taquitos, and tacos. Over the years, it became a fixture in Downey, recognized for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and authentic Mexican flavors.

While many expressed sadness at the closure, there was also a strong sentiment of gratitude. Customers shared stories on social media about first dates, family traditions, and even wedding proposals that happened at Pepe’s. Others praised the family that operated the restaurant for their dedication to quality and customer service.

The timeline for Raising Cane’s opening on the site has yet to be announced.
