DOWNEY – The Downey City Library has several events and activities scheduled for the coming weeks, including:

• A Valentine’s Day storytime Feb. 10-11 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Kids ages 3-5 will enjoy a book, a treat, and create a Valentine’s Day card.
• Booked for Lunch, the library’s reading club, meets Feb. 12 from 12-1 p.m. The group will discuss “Boy Snow Bird” by Helen Oyeyemi, a modern retelling of Snow White as told from the evil stepmother’s perspective, set in the 1950s.
• During the month of February, the library will be playing matchmaker -- with books.

Cardholders can read a brief description and select a wrapped library book to check out. You won’t know what the book is until you get home. (Books will be labeled for age level and type.)

Books should be returned to the library unwrapped.

On Valentine’s Day, the library will host a screening of “Bright Star,” a romantic movie about the evolution of the unlikely relationship between poverty stricken poet John Keats and socialite Fanny Brawne.

The screening begins at 1 p.m. and is appropriate for teens and adults.

• The library is hosting a library card design challenge during the month of February.

Participants should design a new library card, and winners will be announced in three age categories: children (5-12), teens (13-17) and adults.

Paper entries should be turned in at the library or mailed to the Downey City Library (attention Library Card Design Challenge).

To be eligible, participants must live, work or attend school in Downey. Winners will be announced in April.
