BELLFLOWER — A mosquito sample from Bellflower has tested positive for West Nile virus, prompting health officials to urge local residents to protect themselves against the insects.

One in five persons infected with West Nile virus will exhibit symptoms, which can include fever, headache, body aches, nausea or a skin rash. These symptoms can last for several days to months. 

One in 150 people with the virus will require hospitalization. Seniors citizens and people with weakened immune systems could experience severe symptoms of high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, coma, paralysis, and possibly death. 

Residents are encouraged to use EPA-recommended insect repellent when outdoors and to eliminate standing water around their homes. 

Mosquitoes in Studio City and Tarzana also tested positive for the virus.
