With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Mark Wayne Keller, a beloved fixture in the Downey community with his passion for the love of Music and Theater Arts. Mark’s indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication touched countless lives throughout his illustrious career, which spanned decades at the Downey Theater and beyond.

Mark played an integral role as House and Stage Manager, for the Downey Civic Light Opera. From 1986 – 2011. He meticulously ensured that every performance unfolded flawlessly. Covered every detail from the Lobby, Box Office, the costumes and set were out by 12:00 am on closing night. His keen eye for detail made every event a success, and his distinguished voice was a comforting presence during intermissions and before the lights dimmed and curtain raised for the next Act. He touched hundreds and hundreds lives from the Orchestras, Actors, Grips, Crew etc.

Mark’s contributions to the Arts were immeasurable, as he embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and grace.

At Long Beach City College, Mark studied Music, Construction for Set Design. A proud alumnus of Warren High School, Mark dedicated his talents to assisting Mrs. Emerson from the Drama Department. Working with Kyle recently helping design and construction, fostering the next generation of performers. He managed numerous community events, including Downey Beauty Pageants, Dance recitals, Kid’s Day, Comedy Shows, Way Outer Broadway Competitions, Armchair travel movies and more and other city events.

Mark brought a sense of joy and professionalism from backstage to the Lobby. His happy and warm spirit made everyone feel welcomed. His legacy also includes being the beloved “Santa Claus” for the Downey Chamber of Commerce for over 20 years, spreading cheer with his infectious laugh and perfect HO, HO, HO! and perfectly crafted costume. Kid and parent approved! Graced many parties and surprise Santa visits.

In prior years Mark assisted the Downey Rose Float Association doing the sound for the Concerts in the Park.

Mark’s very recent initiative with the Arts Coalition to make the Downey Symphony accessible at no cost showcased his commitment to the arts and his community. Mark served on the Downey Symphony Board of Directors and House and Stage Managed until his passing.

He also was stagehand and set builder at the Ray Bradbury’s Pandemonium Theater and Norris Theater.

Mark enjoyed Kiwanis fundraising events, supporting non-profit theater productions: Love, Sex and the IRS, RUMORS, just to name a few. Working with the community members and encouraged apprenticeships.

Known affectionately as “Markcado” for his generous spirit and his large avocado tree, Mark delighted friends and neighbors with the bounty of his garden. He had a knack for brightening ANY gathering, often breaking into show tunes at the piano or sharing quotes from classic films. Spouting one-liner’s from Alfred Hitchcock to “Who’s On First”! His caring and lightheartedness, kindness, and quick wit made him cherished by his family and friends and an inspirational figure to many.

A good handful of the younger generation refer him as. “Uncle Mark”. Genuine to who he was, supportive and always lending a helping hand whatever case scenario, no matter where in life. Mark had the encouraging spirit all aspects of Theater Arts. Treasured and loved his family. He enjoyed all the stages of his nephews growing up to very fine young men.

He loved dining out and also supporting the local places like Olive Restobar, Pieloon, Downey Pizza, Bob’s Big Boy and of course Canter’s Deli on Fairfax especially after the late night shows. He loved going to see Broadway shows especially in New York.

Survived by: His Sister Wendy Keller Hernandez (Hernan), Nephews Jonathan McHenry, Matthew McHenry (Karina), Aunt Christine (Steve) Washburn, Cousins Martin Christopher, Scott, Kevin, Ben, and their families. He joins his parents, Franz and Sue Keller, in Eternal Life.

As we remember Mark on September 11, a day that now holds additional significance to Patriot’s Day, let us honor his legacy by cherishing the arts and community he loved so dearly. Mark a true patriot always reminding everyone to put the flag out on September 11th!
