Looking good

Dear Editor:On Thursday, June 10, the Keep Downey Beautiful committee will hold an awards presentation at City Hall. Seating begins at 6:45 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m. Certificates will be presented to each award winner. These Beautification Award Winners have been selected for the 2010 Spring Beautification Program. These are the award procedures: An official application is mailed in January along with water bills to all residents and business properties. Recruiting for judges from civic organizations in the community begins in February. It is best to have 15 to 20 judges. Applications arrive from January to the deadline of April 1. They are sorted by category: Home Beautiful, Home Improvement, Multi-Units, Religious Buildings, Lending Institutions, Restaurants, Service Stations, Commercial Buildings, Retail Centers, Industrial Buildings and Institutional Buildings. The properties are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best. They are judged on overall general appearance, use of landscaping, creativity, neighborhood impact and water conservation efforts. A volunteer photographer will take photos of all the winning properties and the photos are used for the PowerPoint presentation the night of the awards ceremony. We thank Keep Downey Beautiful coordinator Carol Rowland for the many hours she spends arranging and planning this awards program. - Byron Dillon, Committee member, Keep Downey Beautiful
