The County Registrar’s office just announced that the effort to recall Catherine Alvarez fell short by only 35 signatures out of more than 4,000 gathered. That is less than 1% needed of the required signatures.

But it is not over. The committee has many more options and will move forward to avail ourselves of every single one of them.

The first one is to appeal and review every signature that was identified. We feel we will find well over 35.

Downey residents are upset and want to recall Catherine Alvarez. They did not know she pleaded guilty to welfare fraud. Then there were two warrants out for her arrest and she shoplifted from Michaels in Downey. All of this was just a few years ago.

This recall was evident by the outpouring of support for her recall that continues today.

The Catherine Alvarez Recall Effort by Concerned Citizens of Downey (CARE by CCD) would like to thank all the volunteers who walked, knocked on doors and helped to get over 4,000 signatures to have a revote for District 3 Councilmember Catherine Alvarez.

Downey residents want and deserve a person of good character and ethics representing them. This recall represents a revolt by the residents who are now informed of her criminal actions.

CARE by CCD will keep our District 3 residents informed of our next steps shortly. We are challenging the results while preparing a second recall. We won’t stop.

Dear Editor:

Over 4,000 District 3 residents declared that they believe recalling Catherine Alvarez is what is best for our city and I, for one, want their voices heard.

All who signed the recall Catherine Alvarez petition were in agreement that Council Member Alvarez’s criminal history should have been disclosed before she ran for office. She deceived the voters and a successful recall will grant District 3 residents the opportunity to cast another ballot; this time as fully informed voters.

The residents were unaware prior to her election in 2020 that she had pleaded guilty to welfare fraud, had two warrants for her arrest and had a lifetime ban from Michael’s in Downey for shoplifting. She admitted these crimes on a recent podcast and offered no remorse whatsoever.

Knowing how important this recall is to our city, it is my hope that the recall effort moves forward.

Quite simply, Downey deserves better.
