Dear Editor:

My wife and I went to our grandson’s junior high promotion at Downey High School (which I graduated from in 1974).

When the class rose to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, only about 20% knew the words, which is very sad for this country.

What are we teaching these kids in schools and their family if they don’t realize the importance of living in this country?

Are we just passing a bunch of kids to get them through the system and, if so, that’s really sad for the city of Downey and for this country.
