Letter to the Editor: Griffiths Indians

Dear Editor:

I agree with Downey resident Ms. Contreras that it's time to consider changing the Griffiths Middle School's mascot .

“An indigenous Peoples' History of the United States” (Dunbar-Ortiz, 2014) clearly documents the centuries-long genocidal program of the US settler-colonial regimen that has largely been omitted from history.

As a former Griffiths Middle, Warren High, and UC Berkeley graduate and current LBCC Electrical Technology student, why not hold a mascot search competition with modest cash prize with the goal of creating something more multicultural and progressive. There are plenty of native fish and tree species that could highlight the beauty of Southern California such as Golden Trout or Live Oaks.
