Dear Editor:

I was embarrassed to see our ex felon council member Catherine Alvarez participating in Walk to School Day last week.

What kind of example is she to the children of Downey when she is an admitted cheater and shoplifter? She is lucky she didn’t dare speak to my granddaughter.

She is an embarrassment to our city and should not be allowed to participate in such events.

Dear Editor:

Regarding the petition to recall Councilwoman Catherine Alvarez, the organizers who do not want her there can begin getting the necessary signatures to remove her from office. This is unnecessary and a waste of taxpayers’ money, almost the same that happened a few weeks ago with our California governor.

Were 5,735 people wrong when they elected Ms. Alvarez? Our voters are thoughtful and they know what they want. That is why they chose Ms. Alvarez.

When I vote for somebody for office, I look for a person who is willing to work, and work for the voter, and not for special interests or groups.

When I bought a house in Downey in 1983, I was stopped by a policeman as I was walking toward my new house (I am a Latino Hispanic from South America). Now when I see a policeman while walking with my wife cleaning the city, they smile at me. Things have changed.

Prejudice and ethnocentrism should not be tolerated in this city which is now multi-ethnic and multi-cultural.

My thinking is let Alvarez do the job for which she was elected. Let her do her community service by being the best city councilwoman she can be. Then let the voters decide, if she proves otherwise.
