Kearns wins writing contest
DOWNEY - Carol Kearns won first place in a fiction writing contest held recently by Writers' Workshop West.Kearns's piece is titled "Off the Grid" and is a story about a street musician who was a victim of a young thief. Peggy Hehman-Smith won second place for "The E Murder Mystery," an amusing tale of computer mayhem. The plight of a gold prospector in early California's gold rush days won third place for Lorine Parks. Her entry is entitled "The Man Who Went from Grub State to Sirloin Steak and Back Again." Winners received a certificate and cash awards. Writers' Workshop West, a Downey writers club, was founded in 1962 and meets each third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Downey High School library.
