Hugh Speers was WWII veteran

DOWNEY - Longtime Downey resident Hugh E. Speers passed away May 8 at the age of 85.He was born and grew up in Cudahy, where he and his wife of 63 years, Florence, were neighbors. He served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Karin AF-33 from 1942-46. Upon returning home from World War II, he and Florence married and later built their home in Downey, moving there in 1950. They had two children, Karen and David. Speers was a plastering contractor for many years before retiring in 1984. An avid fisherman, he made numerous trips to the Bishop area in the Sierra, as well as fishing spots in Utah and Alaska. He is survived by his wife, Florence Covert Speers; daughter, Karen Speers, son, David Speers; daughter-in-law, Terri Speers; grandchildren, Eric Speers and Heather Bleeker; and great-grandchildren, Cody and Kylie Bleeker, and Mackenzee Speers. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
