Historian Nicholas Curry returning to Downey Historical Society

DOWNEY –  Nicholas Curry will return to the Downey Historical Society on Jan. 26 to be the program’s guest speaker.

Curry spoke to the historical society in March 2015, speaking on Edward Doheny in a program titled “Money, Mansions and Murder.”

This time, Curry will give a talk on John D. Rockefeller and several philanthropic foundations, including the University of Chicago, Rockefeller Center, and Pratt Institute.

Curry’s talk begins at 7:30 p.m. in the John Downey Room at the Barbara J. Riley Center.

Meanwhile, the historical society recently received DVD copies of the 1956 football game between Downey and Anaheim.

The DVDs came from Paul Molina, who is creating a documentary on the game titled “The Last Hurrah.”

Also, the historical society has colorful collector plates suitable for display, including plates of the Rives Mansion, Downey Grammar School and the Presbyterian church.

The plates can be yours for a donation of $25.
