DOWNEY – Longtime Downey resident and civic leader Hector Sosa officially pulled nomination papers in his campaign for Downey City Council – District 2.

“It is important that we have someone with genuine Downey roots representing the good residents of Downey on city council,” said Sosa. “I believe in a non-partisan council as this serves the needs of our community best. I want to be a true voice for the residents of Downey and specifically District 2.”

Sosa, 48, is a financial services professional with New York Life. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with emphasis in Finance and a minor in Economics from Cal State University of Los Angeles.

Sosa is running a grassroots campaign that emphasizes public safety, fiscal responsibility, supporting small business, and community outreach.:

Public Safety – With crime rates currently at increased levels locally and nationally, it is very important to emphasize being proactive in ensuring that our residents are safe in our city. As immediate past president of Gangs Out of Downey, I was able to oversee proactive efforts in supporting our youth. This helps maintain a safe quality of life for all residents in our city. As a city we are fortunate to have our own police and fire departments.

As a council member, I’d want to make sure they have the necessary resources available to them to do their jobs sufficiently to protect our residents.

Fiscal Responsibility – It is important to maintain a strong balanced budget. Our city needs to be responsible in spending with complete transparency in all dealings. Being able to sufficiently understand numbers and budgets is key to leading a fiscally responsible city. As a Financial Services Professional with an accounting background and a degree in Business Finance and Economics, I feel that I’m well qualified in this space.

Supporting Small Business – Over 99% of businesses are small businesses; they are the backbone of local communities. Small businesses were hit hard over the pandemic. As a council member, I would work to make doing business in our great city easier for small businesses. I would also work to attract new businesses to come to our city which in turn would bring more jobs and revenues to Downey.

Community Outreach – It is important to maintain a strong relationship with our own school district and Parks & Recreation Department. We need to recognize Downey Unified School District as its own entity and maintain a strong strategic partnership with them to ensure that our youth have the best educational opportunities available. Collaboration along with a strong education is key for our children.

Also, it is important to maintain a strong relationship with Parks & Rec and our local youth sports leagues. We need to make sure that our kids have multiple sports and arts opportunities available to them to participate in. I’ve been able to see the impact that strong youth sports organizations can have on our kids firsthand as a father of two, coach, and board member at DJAA and West Downey Little League for over 15 years combined.

As a council member, I will work hard to make sure that our kids have the best opportunities available to them here.

Sosa was born in Los Angeles to parents who emigrated from Mexico and Peru. He spent the early years of his childhood in Bell, then moved to Downey in the middle of seventh grade, where he attended Griffiths Middle School. He went on to attend and graduate from Warren High School.

Sosa is active in the Downey community, currently serving as president elect of the Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis group. He has also served as a youth ministries teacher at Calvary Chapel Downey and as an English literacy tutor at the Downey City Library.

He met his future wife, Daisy, at Warren High School. The couple has been married 24 years and have two sons, Lucas and Joshua.
