Food bank in need of donations
DOWNEY - One of Downey's busiest food banks - FoodHelp at Downey First Christian Church - is hosting a food drive this Sunday in an effort to stock its depleted shelves with non-perishable food items.Last year's food drive brought in more than 2,800 pounds of non-perishable food. FoodHelp currently serves up to 85 families each week with some sort of free food assistance. The food bank receives regular produce and pastry donations from Fresh & Easy market and Porto's Bakery; however, non-perishable items such as canned food and bottled drinks are always in high demand and low supply. Donations can be dropped off at the church this Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Donors can then stay to watch the Super Bowl on a big screen TV during the church's Super Bowl party. Donations can also be dropped off at the church during the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Downey First Christian Church is at 10909 New St., one block north of the Krikorian Theater.
