DOWNEY – The nomination filing period opened Monday for candidates running in the Nov. 8 general election.

Candidates are required to file and return completed paperwork to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk before 5 pm on Friday, Aug. 12.

In Downey, two city council and three school board seats are up for grabs.

Councilwoman Claudia Frometa is running for a second and final term. She represents District 4 in northeast Downey.

Councilman Donald La Plante, appointed to the seat earlier this year after Sean Ashton’s resignation, is not expected to seek a second term. He represents District 2, covering southwest Downey.

The Downey Unified School District board of education will see a new face as Martha Sodetani confirmed last week that she will not seek another term. First elected in 2005, Sodetani represents Trustee Area 1, northwest Downey.

Board members Bobbi Samperi and Nancy Swenson indicated they plan to run for re-election. Samperi represents Trustee Area 7 (southeast Downey) while Swenson represents Trustee Area 5 (parts of central and south Downey).
