Dr. James Holman was local surgeon

DOWNEY - Dr. James Holman, a physician, surgeon and resident of Downey since 1965, has passed away.Holman was active in the community with his late wife, Eileen, and their seven children. Later, he included his current wife, Jerlene, in his tradition of activity and involvement. Holman served as Chief of Surgeon in Grand Island, Nebr. and again in Racine, Wis. In the mid-1960's he came to Downey Regional Medical Center. At Downey Regional, Holman was director of medical education for 18 years, president of the medical staff, and served on the hospital's board of directors, Memorial Trust Foundation Board of Trustees, and the Million Dollar Club. He also was president of the Southeast District #10 for Los Angeles County. Statewide, he served as a member of the California Accreditation and Licensure Survey. He also contributed to medical efforts in Mexico and Zimbabwe. Holman belonged to the Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis Club and Chairman's Round Table of the Downey YMCA, in addition to serving on the Y's board of managers. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Holman is survived by his wife, Jerlene; children, Steve (Mary), Michael (Kathy), Jere, Kevin, Tara (Jim), Brian (Debbie), and Sheila; and grandchildren, Seamus, Lauren, Matt, Sarah, Joe, Max, Krysta and Veronica. A visitation was held Tuesday at Miller-Mies Mortuary. A funeral Mass took place Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Interment took place at Rose Hills in Whittier.
