DOWNEY – With the new school year beginning next week, Downey Unified would like to share the appointment of two new elementary school principals as well as the lateral transition of two current principals.

As of July 1, former Price Elementary School principal, Mary Edge-Guerra [Weyers], has transitioned into the new position of Coordinator of Before and After School Programs acting as the liaison between the district and the Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities.

With this important new role, transitions and appointments across the district began to take place. The first being the move of Imperial Elementary School’s former principal, Margaret [Peggy] Meehan, as the new principal of Price Elementary School.

With Imperial in need of a new principal, Cary Calvo, former principal of Williams Elementary School, was selected to join the Imperial Bulldog family as its newest member.

Now with an open principal position at Williams, Downey Unified appointed former vice principal, Billie Barrios, to take the lead as principal at Williams Elementary School.

Lastly, with the retirement of Karen Trejo, former principal of Ward Elementary School, and Downey Unified’s Online Elementary School being absorbed by the Downey Unified Virtual Academy, the district selected Gladys Diaz, former Online Elementary principal, as the new principal of Ward Elementary.

Each of these four schools have all communicated these changes to their new and current families; however, Downey Unified wants to share this news with the community so each can be welcomed and congratulated as the new school year starts on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
