DOWNEY — Downey High School robotics students have launched a fundraising campaign so they can manufacture 1,500 face shields for local healthcare workers.

With help from their teacher, Glenn Yamasaki, students are able to produce about 100 face shields per day. They need funding, however, to purchase supplies.

The face shields will be donated to healthcare workers a PIH Downey and Los Alamitos Medical Center, and also to Downey teachers who are helping to distribute meals.

“If we exceed our donation request, the students plan to continue production to complete a larger volume of shields and will begin sending finished shields to other hospital and medical center administrators who request them,” said Matt Knox, who is organizing the GoFundMe on behalf of the Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities.

“Any and all donations will help make an impact. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to those on the front line of fighting this disease.”
