Downey Relay for Life set for Aug. 25

DOWNEY -- Downey’s 18th annual Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society will take place Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Downey Adult School.

The 12-hour event is a celebration of cancer survivorship and an opportunity to raise funds needs to help find a cure for cancer.

The event will celebrate the lives of local residents who have survived cancer while offering the hope of finding a cure. Some 800 walkers are hoping to raise $85,000, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

“The event will begin with the Survivors Lap where approximately 100 cancer survivors and their caregivers will take a victory lap around the track,” said Rita Rodarte-Myers, a survivor and event lead. “The involvement of local cancer survivors is proof of the progress that has been made in improving cancer survival rates and the quality of life following cancer treatment.”

A candlelight ceremony at 8:30 p.m. will honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost their fight against the disease. Luminaria bags for the ceremony can be purchased at the event.

Teams of walkers will keep a continuous presence on the track throughout the 12-hour event, walking in shifts. A full agenda of entertainment is planned, including music, team fundraising activities, and fun theme laps.

Teams and individuals can participate by signing up online at relayforlife.org/downey.
