DOWNEY – Downey High School girls’ basketball standout sophomore point guard Surie Camacho has been invited to participate in the Reggie Rankin ESPN and ScoutsFocus Elite 80 Fall Girls Basketball Camp. 

Camacho was selected from thousands of student-athletes and will be representing her class of 2019 at the camp.

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 19-9 and were 7-3 in S.G.V.L. play. Camacho averaged 8.7 points per game, 4.0 assists per game and 2.4 rebounds per game in leading the Lady Vikings.

■ The DCC football team was defeated last Saturday night at Downey High School by Orcutt Academy of Santa Maria. With the loss, the Grizzlies are now 2-2 while the Spartans improved to 3-1. 

DCC will play Discovery (0-2) of Pacoima at El Cariso Park later tonight. Discovery was defeated by Avalon 38-12 on 9/10 and was defeated by Los Angeles Jordan 36-0 last Friday.
In the Orcutt Academy game, the Grizzlies trailed 16-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors added 22 unanswered points in the second quarter and led 38-6 going into the locker rooms at halftime. 

Neither team scored in the third quarter so the score remained 38-6 Orcutt Academy. The Grizzlies outscored the Warriors 12-8 in the fourth quarter but lost the game 46-18.

Coach Nuno, his staff and players will look to rebound tonight against Discovery and improve their record to 3-2.

■ The Downey High School football team defeated Long Beach Millikan at Millikan last Friday night 48-21. With the win, the Vikings improved to 3-1. With the loss, the Rams remain winless at 0-4. 

Downey will host the Chino Hills (3-0) Huskies this evening. Chino Hills defeated Ayala 19-7 on 8/26, Diamond Ranch 21-13 on 9/2 and Legacy 28-24 on 9/8. The Huskies are coming off their bye from last week.

In the Millikan game, Viking quarterback Trevor Hill completed 10/17 pass attempts for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Atkins completed a 49-yard touchdown pass as well. 

The Downey ground game accumulated 313 yards on 28 carries. Asfunso Elam had eight carries for 138 yards, Baraq Ross had seven carries for 106 yards, Chris Atkins had five carries for 39 yards, Alex Cortez had four carries for 15 yards, Jose Villamil had three carries for 11 yards and Trevor Hill had one carry for four yards.  

The Viking receiving corps were led by Baraq Ross’ three catches for 49 yards, Joseph Alex’s two catches for 56 yards, Chris Atkins’ two catches for 34 yards, Ryder Hawkins’ two catches for 26 yards Carlos Bautista’s one catch for 46 yards and Ricky Hickson Jr.’s one catch for 16 yards. 

The Downey defense was led by Ryder Hawkins’ 10 solo and one assisted tackles, Malcom Perry’s nine solo and two assisted tackles, Michael Cabrera’s two solo and eight assisted tackles, Brennan Fields’ four solo and 5 assisted tackles and Andrew Vodicka’s three solo and six assisted tackles. 

The Viking defense had 15 tackles for a loss, seven sacks and three interceptions.

Coach Williams, his staff and players are looking to improve to 4-1 tonight. This will be Downey’s last preseason game and the Vikings will have their bye next week before they start their S.G.V.L. schedule against Dominguez at Downey on October 7.

■ The Warren High School football team was defeated by Lakewood at Warren last Friday night, 28-22, dropping the Bears to 0-3-1. 

Warren will travel to St. Paul (2-2) later today. The Swordsmen were defeated by Del Oro 44-20 on 8/26, defeated Montebello 7-6 on 9/2, defeated Notre Dame 17-0 on 9/16 and forfeited their game against Bishop Amat last week. 

Tonight’s game against St.Paul will conclude Warren’s preseason schedule as they will now focus their attention on the start of league play.

In the Lakewood game, the Bears led at the end of the first quarter 8-6. Lakewood scored a touchdown and successfully scored on the two-point conversion in the second quarter to take a 14-8 lead into the locker room at halftime. 

Warren outscored the Lancers 7-6 in the third quarter to close the score to 20-15. Lakewood outscored Warren in the fourth quarter 8-7 to hold on to their hard fought 28-22 win.  

Bear quarterback Chris Venegas completed seven of 21 pass attempts for 58 yards. Frank Popoca completed one of seven pass attempts for 13 yards and Jordan Mayes completed one of one pass attempts for 18 yards.

The Warren ground game accumulated 99 yards on 17 rush attempts. Sebastian Valencia had six carries for 84 yards, Chris Venegas had five carries for five yards, Jordan Mayes had four carries for six yards and Frank Popoca had one carry for four yards.

The Bear receiving corps were led by Sebastian Valencia’s three catches for eight yards, Robbie Colenzo’s two catches for 41 yards, Gabriel Sandoval’s one catch for 18 yards, Jordan Mayes’ one catch for 18 yards and Donovan Taylor’s one catch for four yards.

The Warren defense was led by Jorge Valderrama’s 15 solo and nine assisted tackles, SD Poe’s five solo and nine assisted tackles, Ralen Goforth’s nine solo and three assisted tackles, Sirahn Field’s eight solo and three assisted tackles and Rafael Gonzalez’s five solo and five assisted tackles.

Coach Lara, his staff and players will try to get their first win of the season tonight against St. Paul. Warren will have their bye next week before they open up S.G.V.L. play against Paramount at Paramount on October 7. 

■ The middle school sport’s season first rotation began on Monday when Sussman traveled to Griffiths and Doty hosted Stauffer. 

The four Downey middle schools are currently competing in football and girls’ volleyball. Each middle school will host and travel to each of the other middle schools for a total of six games. The team with the best record at each grade and gender level will be determined as the city champion.

At Griffiths on Monday, the Sussman 8th grade football team defeated Griffiths 34-0, the Sussman 7th grade football team defeated Griffiths 24-0 and the Griffiths 6th grade football team defeated Sussman 7-0.

The Sussman 8th grade girl volleyball team defeated Griffiths in two sets 22-20 and 21-14. The Griffiths 7th grade girl volleyball team defeated Sussman in two sets as well 21-17 and 21-8. The Griffiths 6th grade girl volleyball team defeated Sussman in three sets 21-5, 10-21 and 15-11.

At Doty on Monday, the Doty 8th grade football team defeated Stauffer 7-0, the Doty 7th grade football team defeated Stauffer 7-0 and the Stauffer 6th grade football team defeated Doty 13-0.

The Doty 8th grade girl volleyball team defeated Stauffer in two sets 21-18 and 21-14. The Doty 7th grade girl volleyball team defeated Stauffer 21-7 and 21-10 and the Doty 6th grade girl volleyball team defeated Stauffer 21-18 and 21-6.

Doty traveled to Sussman and Griffiths traveled to Stauffer on Wednesday. The results of those competitions were unavailable at press time. Griffiths will travel to Doty and Stauffer will travel to Sussman on Monday.
