■ The Downey High School boys’ soccer program was in the Los Angeles Times newspaper this past week. Head Coach Marvin Mires will watch 13 of his seniors graduate from Downey High School later today as a stepping stone to the four-year colleges they have been accepted into and will be attending this fall.

Coach Mires has raised the bar for his players the last four-years by requiring players to be students first and athletes second. Mires started with a 2.3 G.P.A. requirement and has continuously raised that requirement to 2.5, 2.7 and 3.0 over the past four years.

The requirement was not popular for players at first but when they realized they would be stuck on the sidelines watching, something changed in the mindsets of these young men. If you can compete on the pitch, why not compete in the classroom? The players have bought into this thought process and look at the result. Success!

Jonathan Arteaga will be attending CSUDH, Kevin Chavez will be attending Cal Poly Pomona, Cristian Covarrubias will be attending CSULA, Jesus Diaz will be attending UC Davis, Ivan Donato will be attending CSULB, Marc Farias will be attending CSUF, Mario Galvan will be attending CSUSD, Juan Lopez will be attending CSULA, Humberto Luna will be attending CSULB, Alan Ramirez will be attending CSULB, Darlin Ramirez will be attending CSULA, Eric Rodriguez will be attending CSULB and Salvador Zamano will be attending UC Irvine.

Of the 16 seniors who are graduating today, which were enrolled as freshmen four years ago, 13 were admitted to four year universities and the three others will be enrolled at a junior college or trade school to further their respective education(s).
