Downey families participating in walk to end breast cancer

DOWNEY – Longtime Downey residents Howard Phillips, Malia Phillips, Alicia Edquist and Stephanie Medlin will be participating in the Avon 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara in September.

Howard will walk 39.3 miles while Malia, Alicia and Stephanie will be joining crew to support the walkers along the route.

In honor of Howard’s late wife Susan Phillips, who passed away from breast cancer in 2002, the family is hosting its 10th annual Sue Phillips Memorial Fundraiser which will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. at the Downey Masonic Lodge, located at 8244 3rd St.

This year the fundraiser includes Comedy Fighting Cancer, a show produced by local stand-up comic Vic Diaz. The show will include local comedians, Italian dinner and silent auction. 

All proceeds will benefit the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation. The cost of the event is $35 per person.

The fundraiser is in memory of Susan Phillips, who lost her battle with breast cancer is 2002. Sue was active in Downey PTA, West Downey Little League, Job’s Daughter’s and Warren High Band Boosters. She also taught Tot Time for the City of Downey.

Each walker must raise $1,800 to walk the Avon Walk two-day walk Sept. 10-11 that is 39.3 miles in Santa Barbara. Along with the walkers and crew, Phillips and Edquist’s families join them in helping raise funds and support them during the two-day event.
