Downey Adult School students Edgar Tsarukyan, Susan Bruzzese, Natalie Parvizi, Amber Pilson, and Rashad Gordon qualified recently to take the California Shorthand Reporters Examination to be held on Friday, Nov. 21, in Sacramento. The examination is given three times a year and is the equivalent to a bar exam.  It is a two-part test, with academic subjects tested on one day and machine dictation a different day.  The machine dictation portion of the exam is dictated at 200 words per minute.

To be eligible to take the state test, students must have completed 660 hours of academic training in English, legal studies, medical terminology, court procedures, California codes, and computer training.

Students also must pass all speed tests up to and including a 200 word per minute Qualifier test with four live readers.  All speeds tests must be passed with 97.5% accuracy – near perfect!

Downey Adult School’s Court Reporting/Captioning Program has been in existence since 1972 and is approved by the California Shorthand Reporters Board.
