Dorothy Jane Shabla

March 7, 1929 - March 24, 2021

Dorothy was born in Girard, Ohio, to John and Madeline Casale. She attended Saint Rose Catholic School in Girard and graduated from McKinley High School in Niles, Ohio, in 1947.

Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Roy A. Shabla, at Saint Stephen Catholic Church in Niles on August 19, 1950.

The newlyweds moved to Southern California where Dorothy pursued a career as a radiology technician at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital. Soon she was employed by William V. Adler, MD., whose offices were located on Imperial Highway in Downey. She retired after 32 years of service.

Dorothy and Roy settled in Downey, California, and had three children; one child, Roy Anthony Shabla, still resides in Downey and is a poet and artist.

Dorothy was a world traveler and an avid reader. Besides several trips to Europe, she visited the Soviet Union, China, and South America. She loved various aspects of culture and visited museums throughout her travels and at home. For many years, she was a season ticket holder for the Los Angeles Opera.

She also enjoyed hooking rugs.

Her survivors include her sister, Ursula Cicero in Fort Myers, Florida; her children, Madalyn D. Dornak and Roy Anthony Shabla, and her grandchild, Hadley Grooms.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy A. Shabla; her son, John Edward Shabla, and by both parents. Dorothy was loved by many and her generous spirit was felt by all she encountered. She will be deeply missed. She was 92.

Masses for Dorothy Shabla will be said at the following churches: St. Raymond Catholic Church, Downey, CA – May 2, 2021, 11:00 a.m. St. Thomas More Catholic Community, Henderson, NV – May 7, 2021, 8:00 a.m. St. Rose Catholic Church, Girard, OH – November 9, 2021, 8:00 a.m.
